Certainly less like this than like something else, shall we say. There was more than enough trouble at home without all this nonsense.

Is this just the price one pays for their Earthly life? ... All things considered, I thought I hadn't been doing all that bad. But maybe that's why there's no brimstone?

{And off it goes again.}

Personality. Bishop is definitely not your average priestly, God-fearing type of guy, although saying precisely what he is could also prove pretty hard to pin down. He's quite enigmatic as far as his personality goes, and while what he presents to others is certainly sincere, it's definitely not the whole picture.

For the most part, he shows himself to be a quirky, cheerful, contemplative sort, and seems to be markedly happier than the majority of other characters in DOGs even if he's not without his problems. He's a little goofy and is an occasional source of comedy, particularly where Nill's cuteness and protection is concerned. He's unfailingly polite, even to his enemies and those who'd gladly kill him, and talks to them no differently than he'd talk to anyone else. You could almost say he's got a fearless streak in him, or else that he's just so unfailingly humble that he has no problem seeing anyone as worth his time.

He's intelligent and perceptive, with a wry sense of humour. His nature is gentle, particularly compared to his rougher, more pessimistic counterparts, but he's also very blunt about some things and won't spare feelings if something has to be said. However infuriating he might be the rest of the time, you can at least rely on him to be unbiased and honest when it's going to count the most. He dispenses pearls of wisdom like it's going out of fashion, and his advice is normally very sound.

Beneath the good cheer there's something a lot more serious brewing. He seems to be a man who keeps his concerns well-hidden, and his motives are buried down somewhere along with them. For all his talking to others about their concerns, his own are very much his business and no-one else's, so it seems that many of his relationships are emotionally one-sided. Sometimes some little element of it will surface; his expression might become very worried, and that's how you know when he's thinking through something quite difficult or serious. Despite his sociable nature, it's at these times that he tends to act alone. His interests seem to be the safety of his allies or the world in general, but he's definitely someone who's well-meaning even if his way of going about it is questionable.

Although he's honest about advice, he doesn't always freely share his knowledge of a situation. If he has a goal and is concerned others in the know might meddle, he'll not breathe a word of it. He's sly, perhaps even a bit manipulative. He can read people quite easily, and often gets right to the heart of the problem in just a handful of exchanges. He's not afraid to take risks, either, and can do things that for anyone else might be considered brash with seemingly absolute confidence that he'll be fine. Either he puts a hell of a lot of faith in God, or he puts a hell of a lot of faith in himself to be able to get by when this happens.

Incidentally, he talks about his religion very little; even when it's mentioned by others, he tends not to acknowledge it. He has a strange relationship with it, and at one time comments that because he hasn't seen God, perhaps God doesn't like him. He also seems to take it pretty lightheartedly in general, taking Naoto into a confessional because, for the conversation they were having, it seemed to set the mood.

Econtra Relationships.
† Heine
Friend, brother, someone to keep a close eye on.

Econtra History.
† April 2008
Arrival in Econtra.

Logs.
† None yet.

†

History.

Here's what we do know about Bishop thus far. Bishop was a test subject of the Underground, the group created by the doctor Angelica Einstellsehn, which performed experiments on children. He is equipped with a Cerberos collar across the back of his neck and just as with Heine, it gives him unnatural resilience to death and a multitude of extra senses. This is something he kept a secret from Heine until very recently.

Bishop is a minister - although it's also occasionally translated as Priest, but going by appearances, minister is more likely - in a church where he has given Heine refuge. Heine was apparently trying to find the road to the deep levels when Bishop saved him, knowing he was his brother. Bishop knows much of this obscure Underground group and of many of the people involved, as well as their relationships to each other and what they're after.

He and Heine seem to get along decently. Though Heine's anti-social personality keeps him at a distance, he does have some degree of respect or at least tolerance for Bishop. He feels safe entrusting the winged, mute girl Nill to him, and seems to be more aware than most of Bishop's more cunning side given how well he tolerates his silliness.

On Bishop's part, he's in the habit of giving Heine and most of his acquaintances sage advice - as well as a helping hand from time to time. Despite rarely leaving the church and always being there to protect Nill, he has made exceptions in the past when need called for it. When his senses told him that the DOGs were stirring, he went to find Fraullein and, despite her reknowned deadliness, took a shot at a surprise attack. She did overpower him, but also notably seemed more interested in talking after she realised he knew a lot about what was going on - and about her, as well. Given that nobody has "seen her blade and lived", it's quite an accomplishment.

†

Strengths. Bishop is an able fighter and, despite his blindness, he's able to 'see' his way around with other senses; he can detect a lot more in his environment than people normally naturally could, with unusually sensitive touch, smell and hearing to his advantage. He also seems to have a general sixth sense about things; when the DOGs start coming up, he immediately leaves the church and heads straight over there without hesitation, despite leaving the church very rarely and probably not being aware of his destination.

His intelligence is also one of his better strengths; he's very cunning when he wants to be, and he's also very good at dumbing himself down when he doesn't want it known. You could say his personality itself is something of a weapon, as well; he's easy to talk to, and it means people don't generally mind opening up as much as they normally would. No guarantees that he won't use that knowledge in a way they may not like, but he's most likely to work in the best interests of people.

Weaknesses. Allegedly, he's totally blind. While it inhibits him very little in the manga due to his ability to see his way through with his powerful other senses, it's probably safe to say that the right kind of environment could turn him around, and deprivation of his other senses - an ear infection or catching a cold - could inhibit him considerably.

He has a lolita complex of sorts, although it doesn't seem like it's sexual. He just seems to find young girls unbearably cute, and gushes over them shamelessly. He keep gothic lolita and victorian-style dresses for them as a hobby, and has used the hapless Nill as a model for them since she arrived at the church.

Nill is another weakness of his, though not just because of the lolita issue. He's entrusted with her care, and is horrified and scandalised when ruffians try to break in and get a hold of her. It seems likely than any younger women he grows attached to will be given the same care.

Although he can fight, he's generally likely to be at a physical disadvantage to the better fighters out there. His ability can get him some way with a normal human, but more powerful individuals are unlikely to find much of a challenge in him where pure strength is concerned. He has to rely on the element of surprise and his smarts to get him through, in those cases.
